NFHS rules writing committees consist of experts in the given sport. Each committee member is nominated by state associations, as is the chairperson, who guides the members through their work. Each of the NFHS’s eight sections are represented on the given rules committee. To allow for equal representation, there is also a member of the NFHS Coaches Association and the NFHS Officials Association on each rules committee. Each committee member serves a four-year term.
The NFHS is pleased to welcome four new members of the Field Hockey Rules Committee: Sherry Bryant, Asif Hosain, Kate Graft, and Maureen Dzwill.
Sherry Bryant, Chair, has led a varied 30-year career at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). Bryant is the current associate executive director and also currently serves as associate director of the Massachusetts School Administrators’ Association (MSAA). In her MIAA role, Bryant is the association’s liaison to the Tournament Management Committee and the Ad Hoc Technology Committee. During her tenure, she has overseen the sports of field hockey, basketball, gymnastics, skiing, tennis, softball and rugby. More recently, Bryant led the MIAA’s COVID-19 Task Force and the MIAA Blue Ribbon Committee on Gender Equity.
At the national level, Bryant is a leader in the NFHS/USA Field Hockey Advocacy Group. In 2008, Bryant was awarded the NIAAA “Outside the Field” Distinguished Service Award at the Massachusetts Secondary Schools Athletic Directors Association Conference.
Asif Hosain, Section 6, has dedicated over 40 years to the sport of field hockey, beginning his journey in school in Pakistan and continuing through college and into adulthood. Asif has coached competitive teams for the Futures program and USA Field Hockey’s Olympic Development Program for more than 10 years.
In addition to playing and umpiring for his local adult club, Asif has been an active member of the Colorado Field Hockey Umpire Association, serving on the board of directors for over eight years in various roles, including President.
Kate Graft, Coaches Association, is from St. Louis, MO where she grew up on the sidelines as a player and now as a coach. Graft played collegiately at Indiana University and upon graduation taught and coached at her alma mater, Lafayette HS, helping the team win their first ever State Championship. Graft currently teaches and coaches at Villa Duchesne School, where she helped the teams win five additional State Championships. Graft became the first head coach in Missouri to win State titles at two different schools. She currently serves as co-director of the Gateway Field Hockey Club in St. Louis.
Maureen Dzwill, Officials Association, has officiated field hockey and girls lacrosse for 31 years, serving as an assignor, NJ State Supervisor of Officials, and state tournament assignor for over a decade. Dzwill also held the position of Supervisor of Officials for girls lacrosse for eight years and is currently the NJ State Rules Interpreter.
The Field Hockey Rules Committee Meeting will take place January 13-15, 2025, in Indianapolis, IN.
