Recent Catonsville (Maryland) High School graduate Bailey Weinkam was rewarded for her hard work and contributions to her education-based athletic teams with being awarded the 2014 Brittney Reese Allied Sports Scholarship.

Weinkam was part of the Allied Sports bowling team all four years at Catonsville, and played softball as a senior. Born with hearing loss, she had a cochlear implant placed at age 4 which was to help improve language and speech.

The scholarship was established in 2013 by Brittney Reese, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the long jump. With the Twitter handle of @DaJLBeast, Reese sounds fierce, and may be just that during track and field competition, but the Gulfport, Mississippi native has a much softer side that lends to giving back.

To be considered for the scholarship, the nominee must be of outstanding character and sportsmanship, in life and in sport, as well as be involved with two Allied sports with plans to attend a secondary school after high school.

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association is one of 29 National Federation of State High School Association members offering athletic programs for students with disabilities.
