Coach Maya is a pillar of his community. Throughout his 23 years of coaching, he has helped with numerous charitable causes in his community, from Coats for Kids to raising over $20,000 for cancer research, all in addition to leading his girls basketball teams to 3 state championships! Coaching is about more than just a sport, it's about working with athletes to teach them skills they'll carry for a lifetime. The NFHS is proud to name Coach George Maya of Mayfield High School in La Mesa, New Mexico as the 207-18 NATIONAL Girls Basketball Coach of the Year!

Philosophy of Athletics
Coach Maya loves to learn and learning inspires him to teach others. Through athletics he hopes to positively influence today's youth so they might be good citizens tomorrow. His interactions with athletes involves patience, kindness and most importantly creating diversion from bad choices and peer pressure. Although he likes to win, it is imperative that he do so in a fair and just manner. He works with his athletes to prepare them with life skills they will face beyond high school and strongly believes that athletics is an amazing avenue to encourage responsibility and accountability. He uses a "Character Matters" curriculum with his athletes that values character, not only in athletics, but in life.
