The Florida High School Athletic Association’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve George Tomyn as its Executive Director Elect Sunday afternoon at the Robert W. Hughes FHSAA Building. Contract negotiations begin immediately between Tomyn, FHSAA President Mark Marsala and Leonard E. Ireland Jr., the Association’s legal counsel. A contract is expected to be presented to the Board on May 1, 2017.
“Mr. Tomyn’s energy and passion shined through and we are elated about this selection,” FHSAA President Mark Marsala said. “It was a tight decision, but the right decision was made. Today was proof the process works.”
From 2012-16, Tomyn served as the Superintendent of Marion County Schools (Fla.). Before that, the Ocala resident spent seven years as the Executive Director of School Development and Evaluation for the Marion County School District. Overall, he has 36 years of administrative experience in the Marion County Public School system (4 years as a superintendent, 7 years as a district level executive director, 9 years as a high school principal, 1 year as an elementary principal and 15 years as an assistant high school principal). Tomyn holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Florida.
Tomyn was selected over Louisiana High School Athletic Association Executive Director Eddie Bonine and Indian River Public Schools Educational Consultant Dr. Peggy Jones, who also interviewed for the position Sunday morning. The Board’s scoring was weighted 40 percent on job skills and 60 percent on targeted traits.
Should the two sides settle on an agreement, Tomyn will replace current FHSAA Executive Director Dr. Roger Dearing, who is retiring after serving in his current role since being voted into it on June 12, 2008.
“As a former student-athlete, coach and principal within the FHSAA, I am thrilled to take on this new challenge,” Tomyn said. “I am humbled to be part of the FHSAA’s rich history and look forward to working with the FHSAA’s Board and staff to ensure a smooth transition into this exciting new role.”
