New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association executive director Steve Timko announced on Wednesday that he will be retiring from his position affective December 31, 2017.

Timko, 72, has been NJSIAA executive director since 2006 and was hired by the organization in 2001 as assistant director. Prior to his time at the NJSIAA, he served as director of health, physical education and athletics with the Hopewell Valley Regional School District for 25 years.

"I've spent 50 years working in scholastic sports, and I've had the opportunity to get to know so many amazing student-athletes and remarkable educators," Timko said. "I've recently celebrated a birthday, I'm pleased with how my health is at this point, and my passion for high school athletics is undimmed. Considering all those factors, I decided now was the appropriate time to step aside."

The NJSIAA executive committee will be searching for Timko’s successor based on the recommendation of a special committee containing mostly for executive committee presidents. The committee hopes to be able to present a replacement for vote at the September or October executive committee meetings.
