A hotbed of swimming talent, California seems to constantly produce swimmers that break national records. Seniors Abbey Weitzeil from Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, and Katie McLaughlin from Santa Margarita High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, helped to uphold that reputation at the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division 1 championships this May.

Weitzeil, an Olympic hopeful, broke both of her own national records in the girls 50- and 100-yard freestyle, with times of 21.64 and 47.33 seconds respectively. Her 50-yard time beat her competition by more than a second, and rivaled those of the boys at the meet. Later in the day, she would break her own record in the 100-yard freestyle once again with a stunning 47.09 in the first leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay.

McLaughlin, a University of California commit, reclaimed her national record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.53 seconds. McLaughlin had previously set the record at last year’s meet with a time of 51.78 seconds.
