Thomas Neubauer to Retire as DIAA Executive Director

Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) Executive Director Thomas E. Neubauer, CMAA announced that he will retire. Neubauer will leave the department effective August 16, 2019. 

The 2018-19 academic year marks Mr. Neubauer’s 33rd year working in education for the State of Delaware. He has spent the last 14 years at DIAA, for 11 years he served as the first full-time Coordinator of Officials and Events and for the last three years as executive director.  Neubauer began his career in education teaching social studies at Caravel Academy and then moved to Middletown High School. While on the staff at Middletown he served as Social Studies Department Chair and then for eight years as the athletic director.

During his years as athletic director, Neubauer was honored for his work in interscholastic athletics by being voted the state Athletic Director of the Year in 2002 and during that same year, he received the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association State Award of Merit. Neubauer  was awarded the NIAAA State Award of Merit a second time in 2008. He is a lifetime member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and has achieved the status of Certified Athletic Administrator and Certified Master Athletic Administrator.

Neubauer has been heavily involved in the interscholastic athletics community for many years, representing DIAA by serving on the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Softball Rules Committee, Officials Publications Committee and as Chair of the Boys Lacrosse Rules Committee. Neubauer also was a respected football and softball official for 27 and 20 years respectively in Delaware and Maryland. He held positions as NFHS State Director of Officials and served a term on the Executive Board for the National Federation of Officials.

Neubauer is passionate about athletics and helping administrators, students and student-athletes. Having spent all of his professional career in education and athletics, his investment in interscholastic athletics, DIAA, the NIAAA and the NFHS runs deep. 

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my 39 years in education and interscholastic athletics, all of them in the State of Delaware. I also cherish the many adventures and numerous friendships I have experienced travelling our great nation as a part of my career in education and athletics. I want to thank everyone who has touched my life and made my journey so unique. The people that I have met and worked with and the events that I have been a part of have been truly rewarding. To everyone local and nationally that I know I truly do appreciate our time together.”
