Devoid of girls sports at Long Beach (California) Polytechnic High School, Billie Jean King rose quickly in the tennis world and broke the gender barrier by beating Bobby Riggs in Battle of the Sexes II on September 20, 1973. The primetime ABC broadcast was seen by 90 million viewers. #TitleIXat50
