Title IX Milestones: Dr. Patricia Briscoe (District of Columbia)

Dr. Patricia Briscoe represented District of Columbia Public School’s academic and athletic programs on a national and local level for 43 years. The teacher, coach and athletic director joined the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) Board of Directors in 2006, marking the first time the Board featured a D.C. member and an African-American female.

Briscoe’s service as a teacher and coach at Anacostia, Spingarn and Eastern High Schools is coupled with 22 years as DCPS coordinator and assistant director of athletics. She is responsible for bringing cheerleading to D.C., leading to the first championship being held in 1991, and also helped increase school football participation between 1990 and 1993.

In 1994, Briscoe was awarded the NFHS Citation, as well as the NIAAA State Award of Merit in 1997 and 2007. #TitleIXat50
