The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) made Becky Oakes the second full-time female state association executive director in 1992. Shortly thereafter, Oakes was appointed to the NFHS Board of Directors, and later rose to become the first female elected NFHS President.

Oakes joined the NFHS on a full-time basis in 2006 and remained until her retirement in 2018. She served as staff liaison, rules interpreter and NFHS publications editor for track and field, cross country, volleyball and gymnastics. Oakes previously handled similar duties for water polo and swimming and diving.

Outside the office, Oakes boasted experience as a volleyball, basketball and track coach. She was also a MSHSAA volleyball official for six years and has been a softball umpire. As a participant in high school and college, Oakes played field hockey, volleyball and softball. #TitleIXat50
