The 1998 U.S. Women’s Olympic Ice Hockey team featured three starters who all began their careers in New Hampshire. Tara Mounsey (Concord, NH), Katie King-Crowley (Salem, NH) and Tricia Dunn-Luoma (Derry, NH) all played key roles in Team USA’s victory over Canada to claim the first-ever Olympic gold medal awarded in the sport of women’s ice hockey.
Prior to finding Olympic gold, Mounsey played on the boys team at Concord High School. There, she became the first female player to win the New Hampshire Player of the Year (Class L) award en route to the 1996 New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association (NHIAA) Division I Ice Hockey Championship.
King-Crowley, who currently serves as head coach of the Boston College women’s ice hockey team, excelled in both ice hockey and softball at Salem High School before also playing the two sports with Brown University.
Dunn-Luoma was also a two-sport athlete early in her career, participating in ice hockey and field hockey at Pinkerton Academy in Derry. It was her goal in Team USA’s 7-4 comeback victory against academy that secured the win at the 1998 Olympics. #TitleIXat50
