The Utah High School Activities Association Board of Trustees voted in May to sanction boys and girls lacrosse starting in the 2019-20 school year.
“Our outstanding female and male student athletes will now have the opportunity to participate and succeed in yet another extracurricular activity. When so many students are already participating in this sport, it’s important to let them participate and represent their schools and earn a varsity letter or Academic All-State honors,” said Amber Shill, a member of the UHSAA Board of Trustees and Canyons Board of Education.
“We’re thrilled this has come to fruition. If you look at every state where lacrosse has been sanctioned, the sport has grown.” said Craig Morris, athletic director at The Waterford School, who has been helping represent the Utah Lacrosse Association throughout the sanctioning process.
The UHSAA Executive Committee will determine season placement for lacrosse. The 2019-20 starting date coincides with the beginning of a UHSAA realignment.
Lacrosse will be the 11th boys' sport and 11th girls' sport sanctioned by the UHSAA.
