Nearly twice as many boys play high school golf than girls. And, in some states, girls play on boys teams because there aren't enough participants to field a girls team. The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission is one state association looking to spark interest in girls high school golf with girls only tournaments.

On Thursday at Big Bend Golf Course in Tornado, 10 girls representing six high schools competed in a golf match.

Hurricane’s Olivia Hart was the winner, shooting a 36 over nine holes to beat George Washington’s Torren Kalaskey by four strokes.

Yet perhaps the biggest winner was the ladies’ side of the sport itself.

The match was the second all-girls event held in the Kanawha Valley this year by Winfield coach Kevin Robertson. Another took place at Meadowland Golf Course in Winfield earlier in the season.

The events have come as part of an initiative by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission to raise awareness and girls’ participation in the sport. The hope is to eventually separate the sport by gender. Boys and girls currently compete on the same teams in West Virginia.
