The 104th NFHS Summer Meeting was held this year in Seattle, WA. The NFHS Summer Meeting is comprised of a four-day conference involving general sessions, discussion forums, and networking opportunities. The Women in Leadership team held two events this year, the Women’s Leadership Summit and the Women’s Networking Social.

The Women’s Leadership Summit featured a moderated panel with breakout discussions. The moderator, BJ Kuntz (WIAA), asked the panelists, Monica Maxwell (OSAA), Mautrice Meriweather (NFHS), Hannah Catherine Munro (VHSL), and Jennifer Rukstad (MSHSAA), questions related to the topics of owning your voice, leading with empathy, and empowerment in each of their specific roles. The attendees got to hear the panelists’ experiences, challenges, and successes first-hand, and then were able to breakout and discuss with their peers the experiences they have encountered in their respective roles. The attendees left the Women’s Leadership Summit feeling empowered and ready to own their voice while leading with empathy.

The Women’s Networking Social was held after the Summit and served as an opportunity for the women who are a part of the NFHS membership to socialize and meet new people. At the request of the NFHS Women in Leadership team, attendees were asked to take part in the donation of new sports bras to schools in need in an effort to support student-athletes and help remove barriers to participation. The Networking Social included a fun activity called “People Bingo”, where everyone was supplied a Bingo card with certain facts such as “Is a vegetarian” or “Is a former member of a high school state championship team.” The Bingo card served as a conversation starter and a chance to find commonalities amongst the people in the group. As a thank you to those who attended, each person was gifted with a “Survival Kit” filled with goodies that corresponded with sayings that served as a reminder to keep going when faced with challenges and adversity.
